How to Navigate Your Advisor Compliance 13F Dashboard to Speed Up Filing

The article explains how financial advisors can efficiently prepare and file their SEC Form 13F securities reports using Orion Connect’s Advisor Compliance 13F Dashboard, which consolidates 13F securities values identified by CUSIP, displays the applicable SEC quarter date, provides an on-screen detail grid of reportable securities meeting SEC thresholds, and generates the required XML file for EDGAR submission.

As a financial advisor, managing compliance obligations can be challenging amid your daily responsibilities. However, with a robust compliance suite, this process becomes more manageable.

Orion’s complete compliance suite enables you to address regulatory obligations efficiently. Through Orion Connect, you can capture all your Form ADV and 13F regulatory reporting numbers within a single advisor compliance dashboard.

For this Tech Tip, here’s how to navigate your advisor Compliance 13F Dashboard to prepare for filing your 13F securities report.

Navigating the Advisor Compliance 13F Dashboard

The advisor Compliance 13F Dashboard in Orion Connect provides four key pieces of information:

  1. 1.

    13f Securities Value:

    • This is the aggregated total of every 13F security in your database.
    • Orion identifies 13F securities using the CUSIP from the SEC’s 13F Securities list.
    • 13F Reportable checkboxes are available at the Product (Products & Prices App), Account (Portfolio Audit App), and Asset levels (Portfolio Audit App).
    • If the 13F Reportable checkbox is enabled at all levels and the security’s CUSIP is on the SEC’s 13F list, that value appears on the Compliance 13F Dashboard.
    • By default, 13F reportable is enabled for all products, accounts, and assets.
  2. 2.

    SEC 13f Securities List Date:

    • Indicates the quarter to which the 13F Securities Value applies.
    • Orion updates the list date to reflect the last day of the previous quarter:
      • Quarter 1: 3/31
      • Quarter 2: 6/30
      • Quarter 3: 9/30
      • Quarter 4: 12/31
  3. 3.

    13f Form Report Detail Grid:

    • The “Grid” option lets you review on-screen the securities required for 13F filing.
    • The SEC requires filing only for securities meeting the minimum of $200,000 and/or 10,000 shares.
  4. 4.

    13f Form Report Detail XML:

    • The “XML” option provides the file format needed to upload 13F data into the SEC’s EDGAR system.
    • The XML data matches the data shown in the “Grid” option.

Note: The 13F Securities Value may not match the results from the Grid or XML options due to the SEC’s minimum requirements.
